"Yes, I am," ......I thought to myself.

Thu Apr 19, 2007, 5:41 AM
An interesting thing happened to me yesterday. I was outside enjoying the weather, working on a portion of a ceramic vessel when a man delivering store coupons stopped on his route to ask, "Are you a sculptor?" I looked at him, then to my work, and back at him. The only response I could muster while my brain whirled through six and a half years of BFA coursework, thinking of ways to classify all of my projects in a split second was, "It's more with just ceramics than sculpture." Seemingly satisfied with my answer, he replied, "That's a good hobby to have," as he continued on his route.

So between feelings of slight embarrassment of not having a definitive or even intelligible answer and slightly offended by my work being called “a hobby” (even though it is anyway…lol), I wondered if any of you have encountered a similar situation.

What did you do?

I'm working on a BFA with a concentration in Digital Arts. Instead of telling people all of that, and having to explain, I just tell them im working on a degree in graphic design. It seems most people today don't really see art as art unless it's in a museum or has won an award. I can see how you would be slightly bothered by the man calling what you do a hobby. Hobbies are something you do in your free time. Going to school for six years working on a BFA doesn't make what you enjoy to do a hobby. It's an art. Take painting, ceramics, or drawing for example. Most people would consider those to just be hobbies, yet I know many people going to grad school for each of those "hobbies". I don't think this issues is solely in fine arts but many other arts. Like music, lets say you play the piano. Most people just consider it a hobby. Yet if you played at a large concert or won awards, it would no longer be looked at as a hobby imo. It's sad that people think art has to be amazing and brilliant for it to have any meaning.

i've had people call my jewelry making a hobby!!!???!!!! rather ticked me off....this isn't a hobby to me....to me, my hobbies are my journal making, drawing, photomaniping, writing, reading and such....stuff that i love to do, but do it every once in a while....i do my jewelry ALL the time...i have my jewelry stuff ALL over the house; i've sold some to people here on DA and to people i know and done lots of trades here on DA.....so if i'm making friends and money off this, it is not a hobby....but a future job for me (hopefully i'll be able to sell my stuff somewhere in the next couple yrs; i have a friend who plans to open his own gift shop in a couple yrs and said he'd carry my stuff when he does :excited: )

I meet such people almost every day :D

Situation 1:
A photo - about 70% is a CAR, 30% - a company building.
Client: "Get rid of the car. I like this photo and I got a fried who is a PROFESSIONAL and he said that's no problem. I wanna see my company's buliding. You just need to do it with the computer you know?"
I felt like an idiot for a moment. Computer will do it. Everyone knows THAT :lmao:

Situation 2:
I've started work in new place. I ask my new boss - "Why do you make all websites in Flash? There are some that just need simple HTML coding!" He said - "We are not buing HTML in next couple of months. Use Flash."
I didn't knew what to say...

 And I just started my day at work. Wonder what will happen... :D

Yeah, my mom has offered to sell my ceramic work in her gallery that she's opening. Now, granted that everyone's mom feels their child's work will sell, it's still worth a try. hehe :)

I definitely agree with how you feel. :)

My degree emphasis was graphic design as well, but became extremely interested in ceramics my second to last semester. Ideally, I would like to combine the two areas somehow. I better start thinking of some way to define that now, I guess. lol :)
